A New Therapeutic Campus in Frankfurt
Embedded within the medical campus of Universitätsklinikum Frankfurt, the project responds to a diverse urban context of hospital buildings, open green areas, and circulation networks. Instead of creating a singular institutional block, the design embraces a permeable campus strategy composed of interconnected volumes organized around landscaped courtyards. These green spaces form a gentle gradient from public to private zones, fostering intuitive movement and a tranquil, therapeutic atmosphere. The architecture reinforces pedestrian connectivity and enriches the existing landscape, placing nature at the heart of the urban environment. Architecturally, the proposal follows a courtyard-centered typology that emphasizes human scale, abundant daylight, and spatial clarity. The fragmented massing helps reduce the visual impact of the complex, while continuous horizontal lines and warm materials lend it a welcoming, non-institutional character. Patient rooms and clinical areas are oriented to strengthen both visual and physical ties to surrounding greenery, enhancing the healing experience. Clear functional zoning supports operational efficiency, and sustainable design strategies—such as green roofs, passive shading, and modular construction—ensure long-term environmental resilience.
