The extension to Die Glocke is set within the protected fabric of Bremen’s Dominsel. Rather than imposing a singular gesture, the project works through proximity and restraint, extending the existing ensemble while allowing its different layers to remain clearly legible. A new volume is placed alongside the historic concert hall, separated by a narrow glazed joint. This measured distance establishes a clear dialogue between old and new. The retained façades along Domsheide are incorporated as an integral part of the composition, while a copper roof unfolds in a sequence of pitched planes that echoes the surrounding skyline and reinforces the identity of the ensemble. At the centre of the extension is the Musikerlebnisraum, an elliptical performance space organised around a central stage. The audience surrounds the performers, reducing the conventional separation between stage and hall and fostering a shared musical experience. Daylight enters from above and from the perimeter, allowing the character of the space to shift throughout the day while supporting a wide range of performances. The extension is organised as a continuous sequence of interconnected spaces. Foyers, hospitality areas, workshops and the music club can operate collectively or independently, enabling the building to accommodate different forms of occupation over time. The new and existing concert halls likewise function either as a single institution or as separate venues. The project combines the careful retention of the existing fabric with a lightweight contemporary structure. Its environmental strategy is based on passive principles – natural ventilation, thermal mass and ground tempering – reducing reliance on mechanical systems while supporting a durable and resilient building. Rather than proposing a single architectural object, the project establishes a series of relationships: between old and new, between performance and everyday life, and between the institution and the city. In doing so, Die Glocke is extended not only in space, but also in the range of experiences it is able to accommodate.
