A Research and Laboratory Building in Kassel

The urban context of the project is defined by its integration into an existing campus masterplan, where new buildings reinforce and extend established street lines and spatial relationships. The design creates a sequence of interconnected public and semi-public spaces, including courtyards, plazas, and a central promenade that links different faculties. This elevated promenade acts as a circulation spine and a social platform, encouraging interaction among students, researchers, and visitors. The positioning of key buildings, such as the central research facility, helps to define new urban focal points and strengthens the relationship between the campus and the surrounding park landscape, blending built and natural environments into a cohesive whole. The project is characterized by a clear duality between a heavy, grounded base and lighter upper volumes. The lower levels accommodate laboratory spaces within a robust concrete structure that responds to the site’s topography, while the upper office floors are constructed using a more sustainable timber system. This layered composition not only reflects functional requirements but also enhances flexibility and long-term adaptability. The facade design emphasizes horizontal continuity in dialogue with neighbouring buildings, while introducing a vertical rhythm that reflects internal uses. Together, these strategies create a balanced architectural expression that is contextually responsive and forward looking in terms of sustainability and user experience.
