A New Primary School in Schönwalde
The project is carefully embedded within its urban and landscape context, mediating between the surrounding residential fabric and open green spaces. The site plan reveals a porous composition that extends existing pedestrian routes and integrates natural elements such as trees, water features, and recreational areas into a cohesive campus. Rather than forming a closed block, the building volumes are arranged to create a sequence of courtyards and transitional outdoor spaces, fostering a strong relationship between built form and landscape. This strategy enhances accessibility, encourages community use, and reinforces the school as a social anchor within the neighbourhood. The design is characterized by a modular, timber-based structure that emphasizes warmth, transparency, and human scale. The buildings are articulated into smaller volumes, reducing their overall mass and creating a rhythm that responds to the surrounding context. Generous covering and open interior spaces promote daylight penetration and visual connections, particularly in the central atrium that acts as a communal heart. The exposed structural grid not only defines the spatial organization but also expresses the construction logic, resulting in a clear, legible architecture that balances functionality, sustainability, and a welcoming atmosphere for children.
