The New KRH Klinikum in Großburgwedel
The new KRH Klinikum Großburgwedel is located at the southern edge of the city, where urban development meets open countryside. Designed as a gateway, the project connects city and landscape through a linear park that creates a gentle transition to the surrounding fields while linking to nearby and future neighbourhoods. Instead of a single large structure, the hospital is composed as a cluster of smaller volumes arranged around courtyards and terraces. This “village-like” layout creates a more human scale and a welcoming atmosphere. At its core, a central internal spine organizes circulation and connects all departments. Along this axis, light-filled spaces and gardens improve orientation, bring in natural light and ventilation, and strengthen the relationship with the landscape. The design supports healing, enhances daily use for patients and staff, and allows flexibility for future growth.
