New Civic Center in Aldenhoven

The new Civic Center in Aldenhoven reinterprets the existing 1960s town hall as the foundation for a broader public transformation. Rather than replacing the familiar structure, the project renovates and preserves its institutional character while introducing a series of low-rise, comb-shaped extensions that integrate seamlessly with the adjacent Rathauswiese. Together, old and new form a fluid transition between architecture and landscape, creating a multifunctional civic park at the heart of the town. The one-story extensions ensure visual continuity with the surrounding context while maximizing daylight and views to greenery. Ceramic lamella façades reinterpret local material traditions, establishing dialogue with the nearby St. Martin’s Church. Terraced green spaces, permeable surfaces, and integrated water management reinforce the environmental strategy, while reorganized mobility prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists.
